Switching from plastic to glass or stainless steel for hot drinks and long storage cuts microplastic exposure. Heat and time both speed up the release of microplastic particles and chemical additives from plastic containers into food and beverages. Duke University toxicologist Melissa Chernick and colleague Nishad Jayasundara advise avoiding plastic bottles left in a hot car or in the sun and switching to reusable metal or glass bottles.
